Artist Bio

Artist Statement

Joy Suddery (b.2002) is a Chinese British postgraduate artist who specialises in both 2D and 3D
works. Her current practice is a recreation of the dragon ‘Shendu’ and the 12 Talismans from the
cartoon TV series, Jackie Chan Adventures. This work explores themes of nostalgia, childhood, and
memories. It also allowed Suddery to be open and explore her relationship with her own identity
and culture, as she was born in China and adopted and raised in England. The show being American-
Chinese, has given her a great sense of connection as the series referenced Chinese culture
throughout. ‘Keeper of the Talismans’ (2023) is the embodiment of the journey and process that Suddery
experienced during her last year at Norwich University of the Arts.

Before this project, I was interested in personal objects that have been found and rediscovered in my house while sorting through boxes. While researching, I was particularly influenced by artist Cornelia Parker as she was inspired by childhood shows such as Tom and Jerry to produce her work. I was focusing on the theme of memory while I was depicting my estranged objects.
